Tamron 2x Tele-converter

Tamron 2x Tele-converter
I got the Tameron 2x Tele-converter because at the time I didn’t have a good telephoto lens and I was looking for a way to get some extra length. I thought the tele-converter would be the answer.
I was WRONG!!
Yes, it does make the subject bigger in the frame. Yes, it doubles my focal distance. But at the cost of image quality.
I have had maybe ten images come out somewhat sharp with the use of the Tele-converter. I repeat, somewhat sharp.
Ok, to my credit, I should have probably bought a 1.4 or 1.7 teleconverter, but I was new to photography and didn’t know better. Plus, my technique was suspect. Still, even now, with good technique I can’t get images that are sharp.
It is great for just getting an image that you might have missed because of the lack of focal length and they will make a nice 4×6, 5×7, and maybe even a 8×10, but the image quality is not good enough for anything bigger.
The Tamron 2x Tele-converter has the usual problem associated with all teleconverters. They include the loss of two stops of light and the focusing ability that goes with that loss. It doesn’t have the problem of lack of communication with the camera body.
My Nikon D300 recognizes the tele-converter and doubles the focal length in the EXIF data and all lens functions are still able to be used. This is not true with all tele-converters.
The bottom line? I would not buy this again, but I do use it for times when I want that extra reach. I use it with the understanding that the image quality is going to suffer.
Would I recommend it to a friend. Yes and no. Yes, if they want a relatively inexpensive way to increase focal distance. No, if they are serious about their photography.
