Shooting Water Drops

The other night, bored, I decided to try something I have wanted to do for sometime. Shoot water drops.

I have seen quite a few images on Flickr and other photo sites that have water drops (or other liquid) hitting a pool of fluid and the capturing the resulting splash with a very high shutter speed or flash.

I decided that I would break out my R1 flash system and use that to capture the drops hitting the water. Plus, I could gel the strobes to bring some interesting color into the photo. I will post something about my set-up next week, but until then, here are some of the results.

Fossil Falls, CA – The Details

Revisiting my trip to Fossil Falls last weekend, one of the things I tried to do was to capture the small details that a large, landscape/panoramic picture can’t show.

Here are some of those shots.

Photo of the Week – Morro Bay Bird Festival 2010

In an effort to show more of my photography, on Mondays, I will be posting a photo of the week. Here is my first image.

It was taken during the Morro Bay Bird Festival in Montana De Oro State Park. I wish I could remember what kind of birds these are and when I do, I’ll post that information here.

The image was part of a bigger image that I cropped to eliminate the waves and sand so the focus was on the birds and I thought that the panoramic affect of the image worked well.

Please feel free to offer both feedback and criticism.

Las Vegas at Night (Kinda)

One night, while at WPPI earlier this month, I was in my room overlooking the beautiful Hooters Hotel and Casino when I got this sudden inspiration for an image.

I know this isn’t anything new, but to me it was. I was trying to get a rear flash type of image without the flash. I put the camera on a tripod, set the shutter speed at about 10 seconds, and opened the shutter. after counting to about 8, I started to pan or move the camera until the shutter closed. Yes, I realize that is the opposite of a rear flash type of image, but the intent was to get something similar.

The first one was really just a pan and the second was one of my first tries. The bottom two were two of my more successful attempts.

I know these aren’t perfect yet, but they are the start of an idea.

Please let me know what you think. Your comments are always appreciated.

Seal Beach and Bolsa Chica Wetlands

I spent Sunday, the last day of my winter break, with family and friends. We went to Seal Beach and took pictures around the pier. After that, we went to the movies and then to the Bolsa Chica Wetlands.

At the pier, I was fascinated with the pilings and waves coming in and out. I tried using the 70-200 to capture it, but I found that the Sigma 10-20 really seemed to capture the image better. Using Lightroom in post, I used a little fill light to bring out the detail in the wood of the pier. The end result was surprising. The underside of the pier is visible along with the bright sky in the background. You got to love Lightroom.

We only had a few minutes before the sun at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands so the birds weren’t as plentiful as we would have liked. But the sunset was amazing. I liked the reflections of the clouds in the water. The last picture is a duck (unsure of what kind) just moving in the still water. I liked the wake behind it.

Again, I hope you enjoy the images and, please, let me know what you think.
