The Journey Thru a Photographic Life

Seal Beach and Bolsa Chica Wetlands

I spent Sunday, the last day of my winter break, with family and friends. We went to Seal Beach and took pictures around the pier. After that, we went to the movies and then to the Bolsa Chica Wetlands.

At the pier, I was fascinated with the pilings and waves coming in and out. I tried using the 70-200 to capture it, but I found that the Sigma 10-20 really seemed to capture the image better. Using Lightroom in post, I used a little fill light to bring out the detail in the wood of the pier. The end result was surprising. The underside of the pier is visible along with the bright sky in the background. You got to love Lightroom.

We only had a few minutes before the sun at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands so the birds weren’t as plentiful as we would have liked. But the sunset was amazing. I liked the reflections of the clouds in the water. The last picture is a duck (unsure of what kind) just moving in the still water. I liked the wake behind it.

Again, I hope you enjoy the images and, please, let me know what you think.

The pier shots don’t do much for me although I like the middle one more than the others. The large piling at the right adds some visual interest and a size perspective that I like.

I also like the variable horizontal layering of the sunset. Nicely composed.

I really like the duck photo. Your emphasis is not so much on the duck but of the placid water interrupted only by the unhurried movements of the duck. Wonderful feeling of serene solitude.
